Right now, Ruff Start Rescue is caring for 176 hungry kittens. While we’re incredibly grateful for past support, we’re being honest: we don't receive enough in-kind donations, and buying kitten food retail is not sustainable. We don’t want to be stuck making emergency food pleas year-round.

Kitten season isn’t a moment for us; it’s a marathon. From June through December, our kitten numbers surge, often reaching 300–350 kittens at a time. Even in our “slow” months (January–May), we rarely dip below 150 kittens. In 2025 alone, we took in 1,464 kittens.

Here’s the reality:

Last year, we had to purchase nearly $14,000 in canned kitten food, 632 cases, because donations didn’t come close to meeting demand.

Buying food case-by-case, at non-wholesale rates, pulls critical funds away from medical care, spay/neuter, and lifesaving services.

We’re seeking long-term solutions, like:

• Corporate or business food sponsors
• Ongoing food partnerships
• Consistent community food drives
• Reliable monthly food donors

This is how we keep shelves stocked before they’re empty, and how we avoid crisis mode altogether.
